Water heater replacement in NYC: what is included, what affects the price, and how to choose the plumber
A water heater replacement in New York City is a same-day job for a prepared plumber and a two-day ordeal for an unprepared one. This guide explains what goes into the price of a replacement, what a licensed plumber is required to do that a handyman is not, and why we can quote and finish most jobs the day you call. GW Mechanical Corp carries 40, 50 and 75 gallon tanks on the truck and replaces water heaters 24/7 across Brooklyn, Queens, Staten Island and Manhattan.
In stock and available any time
Equipment prices change often, so we do not publish a price list; you get a written quote, with the unit and all labor, before any work starts, and the quote is honored for the job. What we can promise is availability. These are on our trucks and in our shop every day of the year, so a replacement does not wait on a supplier:
| Unit | Availability | Typical fit |
|---|---|---|
| 40 gallon gas water heater | In stock, same day | 1–2 family homes, 2–3 people |
| 50 gallon gas water heater | In stock, same day | 3–5 people |
| 75 gallon gas water heater | In stock, same day | Large families, 2-family houses, small buildings |
| Expansion tanks, all residential sizes | In stock, same day | Required on most NYC closed systems |
| Power-vent gas water heaters | Usually same or next day | When there is no usable chimney |
| Electric tank water heaters | Usually same or next day | No gas or no vent route |
| Heat pump (hybrid) water heaters | Ordered to size, typically a few days | Lowest operating cost; needs space and a drain |
| Tankless gas units (Navien, Rinnai, Noritz) | Common models in stock; others a few days | Tight spaces, high demand |
| Indirect tanks | Ordered to size, typically a few days | Homes with a hydronic boiler |
Relief valves, gas connectors, flexible water connectors, dielectric fittings, thermocouples, igniters and elements are also truck stock.
What moves the price
- Venting. A heater that shares a chimney with the boiler is simple. A heater that needs a new flue liner, or that has to switch to power venting because the chimney is unlined or being abandoned, adds the most.
- Location. A heater in a tight closet, up a flight of stairs, or in a Manhattan apartment with a freight elevator schedule costs more in labor than one in an open basement.
- Code items the old installation lacked. An expansion tank, a drain pan with a line to a drain, a proper T&P discharge pipe, a sediment trap on the gas line, a level non-combustible base. If the last installer skipped these, the new installation cannot.
- Gas line changes. Moving the heater or feeding a larger burner may require new gas piping, which in NYC is filed work.
- Size change. Going from 40 to 75 gallons often means a bigger flue and a bigger gas line, not just a bigger tank.
- Timing. A planned replacement on a weekday is simpler than a 2 a.m. call, and in both cases the unit is on the truck. Our repair guide covers the warning signs that let you plan.
What a licensed plumber must do on a replacement
In New York City, gas water heater work must be performed by or under a licensed master plumber, and gas piping changes are filed with the Department of Buildings. This is not paperwork for its own sake. The items below are what separates a safe installation from the ones we get called to redo:
- Leak test every gas joint with a detector, and confirm the gas valve and shutoff are correct.
- Check draft at the flue with the heater running, so exhaust goes up the chimney and not into the basement.
- Install the temperature and pressure relief valve with a discharge pipe to within inches of the floor, pointing down, never capped.
- Install or verify the expansion tank and check the house water pressure.
- Set the thermostat to deliver 120°F at the tap, the NYC minimum for hot water, and check it.
- Put a drain pan under heaters above finished space, piped to a drain where one exists.
- Register the manufacturer's warranty, which is often 6 years on the tank for standard models and 10 or 12 on premium ones.
- Remove and dispose of the old unit.
Choosing the right replacement
Same for same is the fastest and simplest: a 50 gallon atmospheric gas heater replaced with a current 50 gallon atmospheric gas heater, same venting, same connections, finished in 2 to 3 hours.
Up-size if you ran out of hot water regularly. Our size guide matches tank size to people and fixtures.
Switch types when the situation calls for it: to a tankless unit if space is tight and the gas line can support it; to a heat pump water heater if the heater sits in a large basement and you want the lowest operating cost; to an indirect tank if you have a hydronic boiler. Our gas versus electric comparison walks through the trade-offs.
Same-day replacement
Because we stock 40, 50 and 75 gallon tanks and expansion tanks on the truck, most replacements in the four boroughs are done the day you call. Call 646-980-2411, or send a photo of the heater's label and we will quote from it.
Questions
How much does it cost to replace a water heater in NYC?
It depends on the size and type of unit, the venting, the location in the building and any code items the old installation lacked. Equipment prices change often, so we quote each job in writing after seeing the heater or a photo of its label, before any work starts. 40, 50 and 75 gallon tanks are in stock for same-day replacement.
How long does a water heater replacement take?
A same-for-same tank replacement takes 2 to 3 hours. Switching to tankless or changing the venting is usually most of a day.
Do I need a permit to replace a water heater in NYC?
Gas water heater work in NYC must be done by or under a licensed master plumber. Gas piping changes are filed with the Department of Buildings. A direct like-for-like swap by a licensed plumber is routine; moving the heater or changing the gas line is filed work.
Can you replace my water heater today?
Usually yes. We carry 40, 50 and 75 gallon tanks on the truck and replace water heaters 24/7 in Brooklyn, Queens, Staten Island and Manhattan.
How long does a new water heater last?
Standard tank water heaters last 8 to 12 years; premium tanks with a 10 or 12 year warranty and a yearly flush often go longer. Tankless units commonly reach 20 years with annual descaling.
